Focus on experiences, as life returns to normal

Your potential visitors have been shut indoors for months and will be looking for experiences to share with family and friends. What can you offer them at your visitor attraction?

When I talk to people about their Covid-19 experiences, they inevitably say it's been hard and they've learnt a lot about themselves, but many have also lamented what they took for granted.

Experiences with other people are high on the list, be that a coffee with a friend, a day out with the kids or a meal with a partner. People have waxed lyrical about the loss of things they hadn't even realised they appreciated - an art gallery exhibition, a trip to the museum, a theatre show....... the list goes on.

As we emerge from what we can only hope is the final lockdown, think about how you can provide experiences that meet the needs of people emerging from a gloomy winter into a spring and summer of greater freedom.

Social drivers will begin to come to the fore once again, replacing the very real fears about the NHS, employment and education, and they're likely to be more important to people now.

People will want to visit places with others; they will want to have choice; and they won't want to be contained by rules. So what do visitor attractions need to be considering as part of this?

  1. Put the visitor at the centre of everything you do - more now than ever before

  2. Competition will be fierce for people's time and money. You need an offer that will match audience motivations

  3. Offer something different so your attraction feels fresh - don't assume that what drove people to visit pre-Covid will be the same in 2021

  4. Natural caution will prevail for some time to come, so make sure your visitors feel reassured that your site remains safe

  5. Make sure you can cater for extended families and groups through your activities and catering offer

Building experiences that connect visitor to your attraction have always been vital, but now more than ever you need to build customer loyalty. Creating a great experience can help you do that and I can help you explore what works for you and your audiences.
