Avalon Marshes: 10-year visitor strategy
The Avalon Marshes in Somerset is one of the best places to see wildlife. A network of nature reserves provide a haven for both nature and people with the Avalon Marshes Visitor Centre sitting at the centre as a gateway into the landscape.
The reserves include Ham Wall (RSPB), Shapwick Heath (Natural England), Shapwick Moor (Hawk & Owl Trust), Westhay and Catcott (Somerset Wildlife Trust) each with their own management plans, but linked by the landscape with the organisations working in partnership. Between them they currently cover around 1,500 hectares.
Linked to the natural history is the story of human occupation of the land, the centre piece of which is the Sweet Track, one of the oldest trackways in the world building in 3806 BC.
Leading a team of specialist consultants, including insights, ecology and fundraising, I am researching and producing a 10-year strategy to shape the future visitor experience on the Avalon Marshes. This will link the sites and partners to neighbouring towns, highlighting the stories and better connecting visitors to both place and cause.
A full strategy with recommendations will be delivered in May 2024.
